What Affects Your Diamond Payout?

At Broff’s, we evaluate diamonds with precision and transparency.

Whether you’re selling a loose stone or a diamond ring, here’s what determines your offer:

The 4Cs: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight

These four core grading factors—established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA)—are essential:

  • Cut: Impacts brilliance and value. Ideal and Excellent cuts yield higher payouts.

  • Color: The less color (graded D-Z), the more valuable, especially for white diamonds.

  • Clarity: Fewer inclusions and blemishes = better value.

  • Carat: Larger diamonds typically have higher per-carat value, especially over key thresholds (1ct, 2ct, etc.).

Read our article on the value of a diamond to learn more about the role the 4C’s play in the diamond valuation process.

Grading

Stones with Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grading reports are easier to appraise and command stronger offers. Uncertified stones can still be evaluated, but may require further inspection.

Fluorescence & Symmetry

Strong fluorescence or poor symmetry can lower value, while excellent polish and symmetry improve desirability.

Condition & Setting (if mounted)

Is the stone chipped or scratched? Set in a vintage or designer ring? The setting may add value, or we may need to remove the diamond to assess it properly.

Market Demand

Fancy shapes, vintage cuts, and even color-treated diamonds can fluctuate in resale value based on trends and demand.

Natural vs Lab-Grown

Natural diamonds command higher resale value. We do not purchase lab-grown or synthetic stones.
